5) Stereotype - how is it different from and archetype
ReplyDeleteStereotype is a kind of negative prediction that people have. It is related to human’s characteristic qualities. For example, when we think about “stepmother” we are more likely to imagine the woman who is cruel and wicked because we have already seen the character of stepmother in stories like Cinderella, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel.
As Admin (2016) reports, “Stereotypes may seem like an oversimplified representation of a type, gender, religious group, class, or occupation” (para. 8).
Archetype is the way that you regard some similar things as the same one. For example, if you look at the heroes such as Beowulf, Harry Potter, Superman, Sherlock Holmes. They have their own characteristics but we bind them together and define as the hero.
“Archetype is a constantly recurring symbol or motif in literature that represents universal patterns of human nature” (Admin, 2016, para. 2).
The biggest difference between stereotype and archetype is like that. Stereotype can only be found in characters whose have traits. But archetype can be a character itself, a theme, or a situation.
